Farming

Those of you who know me will be aware that my third job is that of a smallholder.

Last night on TV it was made apparant why the EU and our government are killing the UK's agricultural industry.

As from next year all sheep born will have to have an electronic tag inserted as opposed to an ear tag. The 'modern tag' costs £1.55p. the old ear tag 22p. As approx 8% of new lambs die, that is a serious amount of money wasted.

Result, we all have to buy New Zealand Lamb with the consequential air miles.

Me , I've gone over to rare breed pigs, better on the bar b q and less paper work/ electronics .

(and better for a sunday roast)

The Church of England has always been called the Tory Party at prayer. Isn't the farming community the Tory Party with snouts in the trough - EU and UK subsidies, set aside, single farm payments...

Farmyard version of European and UK Parliamentary allowances...and we all know how many Tories have bathed in the cash there.

Thanks 1903, 1610, understand your concerns, but I have never yet received a subsidy, single farm payment, or set-aside payment, wish I had!

Anon 19.03, you can express an opinion - and what you and Councillor Gregory are expressing about the EU ARE opinions, not facts - without comments such as "grow up" and "get a life".

I am grown up, I have a life, and I have opinions, which I should be able to express without your kind of insult.

It seems to be the "thing" on local Thanet blogs to disagree with someone by challenging not their views but their social, intellectual or psychological state. It almost always comes from those on the right, politically. And it comes from certain blogmasters. The recently re-opened Thanet Life includes comments from its owner, Tory Councillor Moores, such as:

“I wonder, in your drab, resentment-filled space (12:38) whether you have ever been the catalyst for such happiness?”

“And if your own life is even slightly interesting or effective, which I very much doubt...”

Almost makes me wonder if it really is a widespread phenomenon, or if bloggers such as Councillor Moores also post anonymously just to keep their juices flowing. Whatever, why not argue the issue without insulting personal remarks? And set aside the intellectual snobbery that is a pervasive feature of the Tory commentators - they think only they have brains, business acumen, ability and achievements.

And I thought Peter Mandelson was labour (In respect to the comment about intellectual snobbery)

Heeeeeeee heeeeeeeeee makes me laugh how we have gone from lambs dieing to politics and personal attacks. I come from a farming background my farther own his own farm we never had electricity had bottled gas and an outside toilet.. Hardly landed gentry. The EU are a layer of goverment that are so far removed from reality that it is just a small speck on the horizon. Not too long ago it was not worth spending on a cartridge to shoot a sheep let alone spend £1.22 on tagging it. Farming is unlike any other job and the rewards are not always financial
