British Energy

Why is anyone surprised that EDF called a halt to the aquisition of British Energy?

Lets think, The British Government are talking about a windfall tax on Britains energy supply companies, EDF is one, The Government want EDF to build new nuclear Power plants. (and the are the only company interested.

add that lot together, and work out who has the upper hand.

I know, I know! Is it Basil Brush? No. No, that can't be right. Someone has his hand up him.

I believe the main reason the sale didn't happen was because EDF have not offered enough money to the existing shareholders - quite a common outcome in major commercial transactions of this kind, as you know. They offerred somewhere around 760p per share, whereas the sought price was something over 800p.

Most informed commentators seem to think EDF may return with a higher offer. Contrary to your suggestion, they DO want the company.

Well lets face it Ken. None of this may have happened if the energy utilities were still in our hands and under government control!

Remember it was the tories who privatised them!

T G D you are corrrect, and at the time they did it I was not a Tory. That was one of the reasons. Times move on and we must now deal with what cards we have.

I now firmly support many more of the ideas of the Conservative Party than of the Labour Party, but not all. If there were no debate within a party, annual conferences would be over in about 15 minutes and newspapers and bloggers alike would have a very boring time.
