Local Paper loses reporter

Sad to hear that our local 'newshound' has departed to pastures new (Ashford) He will be our loss and their gain.

More importantly it tells us that areas that pay better wages get the best staff.

Believe it or not Ken, local journalists are poorly paid compared to other jobs which demand less responsibility and less intelligence, yet pay more. The KM hourly rate for freelancers is still £12 per hour, paid for seven hours a day - and this has not changed in 10 years.

Northcliffe - which own the ITG, TT and Adscene - pay their employees slightly less than the KM pays its staffers, £21,000 for a qualified reporter and about £15,000 - £18,000 for a trainee.

Photographers in the main are doing well to earn more than £18k and frequently have to work 10-12 hour days.

I doubt very much that working in Ashford will pay more than working in Thanet - it's just a lucky reporter switching from one bunch of skinflints to one slightly less skinflinty mob.

BTW your heading has a spelling error in it - please amend!
